Kentucky’s Medical Marijuana Program Draws Over 2,000 Dispensary Applications
Kentucky is making significant strides in its medical marijuana program, as the state’s Office of Medical Cannabis recently reported over 2,000 applications submitted for dispensary licenses. With the application portal closing last Saturday, the state has received a flood of interest ahead of the lottery drawing set for October.
Breakdown of Applications
“As of Friday, the Office of Medical Cannabis received a total of 2,650 applications across various licensing categories. This is a positive sign for those in need of medical cannabis access.” David Koyle, CEO OMNI Medical Services
Dispensaries: 2,282 applications
Processors: 117 applications
Safety compliance facilities: 3 applications
In addition to dispensary applications, dozens of individuals applied for cultivator licenses, which are categorized based on indoor growth area size:
Cultivator License Applications
Tier I (up to 2,500 square feet): 96 applications
Tier II (up to 10,000 square feet): 96 applications
Tier III (up to 25,000 square feet): 56 applications
This surge in applications highlights the growing interest and potential economic impact of medical marijuana in Kentucky.
Dispensary Fees Generate Significant Revenue
The dispensary application process alone has already generated substantial revenue for the state. With a nonrefundable $5,000 application fee per dispensary, the state has brought in close to $8 million ahead of final numbers from the Office of Medical Cannabis. This figure underscores the financial potential of Kentucky’s burgeoning medical marijuana industry.
A Rapid Increase in Applications
The number of applications spiked dramatically in the final days before the portal closed.
A Facebook post by Katie Moyer Arzamastseva, president of the Kentucky Hemp Association, revealed that by Thursday evening, there were 1,851 total applicants, including 1,593 dispensary applications. This was a sharp increase from the end of July, when fewer than 30 applications had been submitted.
What’s Next for Kentucky’s Medical Marijuana Program?
Once the October lottery is completed, 48 dispensaries will begin operating in Kentucky by January 2025. Jefferson and Fayette counties will each have two dispensaries, while other counties will be allowed one. The state has not yet clarified how many cultivation licenses will be approved for operation starting in 2025.
