In a move that could bring big savings and greater access to medical cannabis, Florida lawmakers are moving forward with House Bill 555 (HB 555)—a proposal that would waive registration fees for honorably discharged veterans and extend card renewal timelines for all patients.

🧾 What HB 555 Proposes:
HB 555, filed by Rep. Joel Rudman (R-Navarre), was unanimously approved by the House Health Professions & Public Health Subcommittee on April 4, 2025.
Here’s what the bill includes:
💸 No More $75 Fees for Veterans:
Veterans with proof of honorable discharge would no longer have to pay the state’s $75 fee to obtain, renew, or replace their medical marijuana use registry ID cards.
⏳ Two-Year Validity for Everyone:
The bill extends the renewal period of medical cannabis ID cards from one year to two years, reducing paperwork, costs, and time for all Florida patients.
🇺🇸 Why It Matters for Veterans
"Florida is home to over 1.4 million veterans, many of whom rely on cannabis to help manage conditions like PTSD, chronic pain, and anxiety. This bill acknowledges that medical cannabis is healthcare—and aims to reduce barriers for those who served." David Koyle, CEO OMNI Medical Services
With medical marijuana not covered by insurance, cost-saving measures like HB 555 could go a long way in improving veteran care.
🏛️ HB 555 Florida: What Happens Next?
As of April 4, 2025, HB 555 heads to the Health & Human Services Committee for further review.
A companion bill, SB 552, is already working its way through the Senate.
If passed, the changes would go into effect July 1, 2025.
