Amazon: Planet Earth’s Third Largest Employer Ends Marijuana Policy and Supports MORE Act

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

Amazon Stops Comprehensive Drug Testing for Marijuana

In a historic first for a global Goliath, Amazon announced that it will end mandatory drug testing for marijuana. Only Walmart and China National Petroleum employ more humans than Amazon globally (private and semi-public companies.) More employers are likely to follow Amazon’s new drug almost-free policy to keep up with the demand for skilled labor.

Amazon To Treat Marijuana Use the Same as Alcohol

  • No longer include marijuana in our comprehensive drug screening program for any positions not regulated by the Department of Transportation

  • Will instead treat it the same as alcohol use

  • Will continue to do impairment checks on the job and will test for all drugs, including cannabis and alcohol, after any incident

  • Will no longer be fired simply for using cannabis away from your job (may exclude motor vehicle drivers.)

“In the past, like many employers, we’ve disqualified people from working at Amazon if they tested positive for marijuana use…However, given where state laws are moving across the U.S., we’ve changed course.” Source Amazon

The majority of the United States citizenry now lives in a state with access to medical marijuana.

Amazon Lobbies Congress in Support of MORE Act 2021 Marijuana Legalization

Amazon also announced that it will now lobby Congress to end marijuana prohibition and support the MORE Act of 2021. The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2021 would legalize marijuana at the federal level, expunges criminal records for marijuana, and invests funds into local communities impacted by the war on drugs.

The MORE Act 2021 was introduced by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and the Cannabis Caucus.

“Because we know that this issue is bigger than Amazon, our public policy team will be actively supporting The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2021 (MORE Act)—federal legislation that would legalize marijuana at the federal level, expunge criminal records, and invest in impacted communities…We hope that other employers will join us, and that policymakers will act swiftly to pass this law.” Source Amazon
